Why Standard Bra Sizing Fails So Many Bodies
If you have spent years convinced that you are the problem, that your body is somehow too difficult, too uneven, too big or too small or too in-between to ever be properly fitted, you are probably far from alone. The problem was never your body. The problem is the system used to size it.
The myth of the "standard" body
Standard bra sizing rests on a quiet assumption: that as one part of the body grows, the rest grows with it in fixed proportion. That a wider ribcage always means a fuller bust, that the two sides of a body match, that everyone of a given measurement shares the same shape.
No body we ever came across works this way.
Over years of measuring our customers, we have come to a simple conclusion: most people are not wearing the wrong size because they measured carelessly or were given the wrong advice. They are wearing the wrong size because there is no right size out there for them. The system simply does not hold the range of real human bodies, and when a system fails most of the people using it, the simple conclusion is that the system is wrong, not the people.
What we see, again and again
We measure real bodies for a living, and the same frustrations come up so often that we could almost predict them before a new customer says a word:
Cups that gape and wrinkle because the breast is smaller or not as full as the breast for which the cup was built for. Or the opposite: the breast is spilling over a cup that was never cut to hold it. A band that grips too tight around the ribcage, or sits too loose. A band that rides up the back instead of sitting level. Wires and edges that cut in painfully under the arms or between the breasts. Straps that slide off the shoulders no matter how tight they're set, straps digging painful grooves into the shoulders, because they are too thin, too weak, with the band underneath not doing its job and the straps left carrying all the weight, wires sitting on soft breast tissue instead of behind it, poking and aching by the afternoon (or earlier - we have seen scars you would not believe), a center that will not lie flat against the chest. And, at the end of the day, that unmistakable map of marks pressed into the skin, the body's quiet record of a garment that fought it all day long. Not to mention the psychological damage created by garments that make us feel like something is wrong with us.
None of these are your fault. Every one of them is a sizing, construction and material problem, not a body problem. Always remember: if something does not fit, it is not your body’s fault but simply the garment not being the right one for your body.
The most common mismatches
A small band with a fuller bust. One of the most frequent of all: you need a snug band around a narrower ribcage, but a cup with room for a fuller bust, and standard sizing keeps forcing you to choose one or the other. Size for the band and the cup overflows, size for the cup and the band rides up and gives you no support. Many people spend years bouncing between the two, never offered the opportunity to have both the band and the cups cut independently, to their unique measurements and needs.
A fuller band with a smaller bust. The mirror image, just as overlooked. The market assumes a larger frame comes with a larger bust, so cups gape and the shaping is wrong, leaving you feeling that beautiful lingerie simply isn't made for a body like yours, when the truth is only that it isn't sized for it.
Two sides that differ. Almost everybody is a little asymmetric, and many people noticeably so. It is one of the most common things we see, and one of the most universal. We learned just how universal the first time we measured someone who had had cosmetic breast surgery, and found that same natural asymmetry still gently there, a quiet surprise to us, and proof that no two sides of a body are ever truly identical, however they came to be. Standard sizing can only ask you to split the difference and settle for neither side fitting well. Made-to-measure embeds the answer naturally, each side cut to its own measurements.
A shape the size chart never imagined. Bodies change with age, with weight, with life. A number on a chart cannot capture where a body actually carries its shape, only a measurement of your body can.
Why "just get fitted" isn't the whole answer
Being professionally fitted is genuinely helpful, and if you have never done it, it is worth doing. But a fitting can only find you the closest existing size. If your body doesn't match any of the shapes the manufacturer cut for, the best fitting in the world still ends at "this is the nearest we have." For a great many people, the nearest available is still a compromise.
Support that doesn't rely on wire
There is a stubborn myth that a fuller bust needs underwire to be supported, that comfort and real support cannot exist together. We don't accept that because we love freedom. We make wire-free pieces for every body, at every size, because support doesn't come from a wire digging into you, it comes from a garment cut precisely to your shape, holding you because it fits, not because it constrains you.
This is also where fabric matters, and not as a luxury but as a function. A well-chosen, quality fabric does real work, in that it supports, it holds its shape, it moves with you and recovers, and it stays comfortable against the skin all day rather than stretching out, pinching, or cutting in. High quality materials are part of how a piece supports you, not decoration on top of it.
The alternative: made to your measurements, not to a chart
There is another way to make lingerie, and it is much older than mass sizing: measure the body, then make the garment to it.
Made-to-measure begins from you, your bust, your breasts, your asymmetries, your body’s story, and builds the piece around those measurements. There is no standard body to fail to match, because there is no standard body involved. The garment is made for you, rather than asking you to try to fit into it.
At Rue du Paradis, every piece is made to measure, by hand, for one person alone, preferably wire-free, in fabrics chosen for real support and comfort. If you'd like to understand how it works, read about our process, or see the pieces we make (use a full screen on a computer). Whatever your shape, your gender, your age: you belong here and we cannot wait to serve you.
